Tricks to Staying Warm While Camping in the Fall

Camping in the fall can be a blast but only if you are prepared for anything and everything. Don't doubt the unexpected; just go with the flow and you will be much happier.

Layer Up

Layering is essential to keeping warm in any cool weather no matter the activity. You will want to start with a base layer such as thermal underwear like Nike or Under Amour that wicks away moisture from your skin. Then add a layer for warmth and finally a layer that is breathable and waterproof as the outer layer to keep the body heat from escaping.

Eat Carbs and Fats

It is not the time to go on a diet. Carbs help you internally stay warm. Good fats like fish, mixed nuts and avocados are also helpful as you burn calories when hiking and doing those other strenuous activities.

Drink Hot Beverages

Bring insulated mugs for everyone to use to sip on hot beverages or hot soup throughout the day. These hot beverages will increase your internal temperature to stay warm.

Double Up Your Gear

The nights get cold so don't be caught without a ground sheet and an extra foam pad between your sleeping bag and the ground.  Or you can simply double up your sleeping bag.

Things to Add to Your Sleeping Bag

There are a couple things you can do to keep warm while sleeping. Don't forget a water bottle; you can use it to snuggle with. Best to keep it at your toes along with your clothes you will want in the morning.

Get Your Body Moving

Before you jump out of the sleeping bag into the crisp air move around for 2 - 3 minutes to give your body a chance to warm up.

Invest in Booties

Hiking boots are great but down booties are excellent to use inside your sleeping bag to keep your feet warm. You will appreciate them for sure.
