Fall Camping Tips

There is nothing like enjoying camping in the fall. The days are typically warm, and the afternoons fade into the crisp evenings. It is the perfect season to spot wildlife, explore the trails and see all the beautiful colours of the foliage while avoiding the bugs. Quality time can be spent around the crackling fire with family and friends but remember these tips to ensure to keep your party comfortable during your fall camping adventure.

  1. Find the Perfect Location - Target areas that speak to the types of activities you want to take part in such as hiking, canoeing, biking, tree top trekking etc. Do some research to find the best areas to spot wildlife, pick berries and see the colourful foliage.
  1. Leave Time to Set Up - Remember it gets dark earlier in the fall. Try to arrive a few hours prior to sundown so you can completely set up.
  1. Watch for Wildlife - Be sure to pack all your food away before turning in for the night to avoid unwanted attention from wildlife in the area.
  1. Stay Hydrated - It is easy to forget how essential water is in the cooler weather. Stay hydrated by remembering to take a recyclable water bottle full of water on your hike or any other strenuous activities you may be doing.
  1. Plan Ahead & Check the Weather - This likely seems silly or simple common sense but it is worth repeating. Put together a packing list for clothing, gear and any tools you might think you need. Always good to check out the equipment to ensure all is in working order and to check the weather. Important to find out the tent has a hole or a broken zipper before you go. Plan for a fluctuation in temperature throughout the day.  You will want to have the right clothes to stay dry and warm.
  1. Activity List - Think about a few activities in advance of what you may want to do on your trip to maximize your time for fun. This will ensure you have the right clothing/gear with you ie. hiking boots, layers of cloths, extra footwear, and waterproof clothing
  1. Setting up the Campsite - Chose the location for the tent based on where the sun will shine in the morning and that is somewhat flat. You do not want the rain to run into the tent because you are on a slop or find your tent is in a big puddle. That is never fun.
  1. Prepare for Wind - Hang a tarp between the trees near your tent to protect from the intense fall winds.  Ensure your secure the tarp firmly and perhaps hang another tarp over the picnic/eating area to provide a dry place to eat in case it rains.
